Claude Monet - Joan Mitchell

Description

Catalogue of the exhibition "Joan Mitchell Retrospective", first part of the exhibition "Monet - Mitchell", presented at the Fondation Louis Vuitton from October 5, 2022 to February 22, 2022.

This book is published in English by The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, on the occasion of the travelling exhibition "Joan Mitchell" from September 4, 2021 to January 17, 2022 in San Francisco.

This "Joan Mitchell Retrospective" exhibition is now at Fondation Louis Vuitton and opens the first part of the "Monet-Mitchell" retrospective.

The illustrations in this book cover her entire career - from the New York paintings of the early 1950s to the polyptychs she later executed in France. Iconic works by Mitchell are reproduced here, as well as rarely seen paintings, works on paper, sketchbooks, and photographs documenting her life, her circles of friends and acquaintances, and her everyday environment. Bringing together previously unpublished texts by art historians and scholars, analyses of the works, and testimonies from artists and writers on the artist's itinerary, this book is organized chronologically into ten chapters, each focusing on a series of closely related works that reveal an ever-evolving inner landscape, colored by experience, sensation, memory, and a profound sense of place.
