Description

As a young girl, Louise helped her mother in her tapestry restoration workshop. But her mother soon contracted Spanish flu and died. Louise, who had spent part of her childhood looking after her mother - who was also her best friend and greatest admirer - was overwhelmed by grief.

While attending university in Paris, she became a talented painter and printmaker. Fernand Léger spotted her and encouraged her to take up sculpture. In 1945, she moved to New York with her husband. On the roof of their flat, she created large wooden silhouettes, her very first sculptures. It was the start of a 60-year career as one of the world's leading sculptors.
