L'Abbé et le Condottière : Correspondance Gustave Fayet - André Suarès 1923-1925

9782487468641

Two men, two temperaments, one shared fever: the consuming fire of art and the redemptive power of beauty. Between the Abbot, a builder of dreams, and the Condottiere, a fierce knight of letters, a brotherhood takes shape against the grain of the world. Three years, a handful of letters, and eternity for their dwelling: such is the blaze of a friendship only death could bring to an end.

Description

In the autumn of 1923, Gustave Fayet reaches out to André Suarès, and seventeen years of silent devotion flare into a friendship as sudden as it is unexpected. One, the Abbot, conjures beauty from stone, colour, and bold enterprise; the other, the Condottiere, reigns over his solitude like a fierce prince in an inward kingdom. From dreamed-of books to journeys suspended between Majorca and the mists of Venice, their letters open windows onto an inner geography where art becomes a secret language. All seems to set them apart, save for their hunger to create, their way of inhabiting the world with an intensity bordering on the sublime. Surrounded by essays and documents, their words revive the fragile grace of a dialogue in which two solitary souls learn to recognise one another without ever becoming alike. Brought to an end in 1925 by Fayet's death, this previously unpublished correspondence remains an incandescent trace of a fleeting encounter - a rare work of friendship that slips beyond the reach of the time in which it was born.
