Mark Rothko

Description

Mark Rothko was born in 1903 in Dvinsk inside the Russian Empire under the name of Marcus Rothkowitz. He gives up this name in the 30s to fully adopt the american nationality. After World War II, he starts to affirm what will make his international fame : his screen colors. During the 60s, he achieves his masterpiece : a set of dark screens for a chapel named Chapel Rothko in Houston. 1970 is marked by Rothko's suicide.

Stéphane Lambert investigates what troubled Rothko, and the gradual erosion of his heritage in his works. The text intertwines poesy and plastic arts, artist and biographer.
