With its tradition of funereal folklore, Mexico was bound to enchant Deborah Turbeville (1932-2013). "This country speaks to me constantly," said Richard Avedon's protégée after traveling the length and breadth of the territory, listening to its 'textures' and the 'sensations' offered to her. In 1986, she fell under the spell of an 18th century convent in San Miguel de Allende, a colonial town perched on the Mexican Plateau in Guanajato. Surrounded by dogs, birds, ex-votos, candles and antique furniture, it was here that Turbeville decided to live and express her creativity between her stays in St. Petersburg, New York, Paris and Krakow. Because everything "intertwines" in the work of this woman who damages her photos by coloring, scratching, tearing, copying, pasting and annotating them, like the pale reflection of an "imperfect past" imbued with magic.
