Alasdair McLellan is no stranger to Scotland; his father, a Gordon Highlander fascinated by Gaelic culture, taught him all about its lakes and legends. The family album suddenly gives way to another picture: a rebellious nation. McLellan depicts Scotland in the middle of winter, when its "extreme climate" makes it "all the more photogenic". The Highlands are featured, as are the Cairngorms, the islands of Skye, Mull and Iona, Edinburgh and Inverness. From the snow-capped peaks of Glencoe, absorbed in mist, to the desolated districts of Glasgow and Aberdeen, his images vary in the manner of a place crossed by time: sometimes in black and white, sometimes filtered through shades of tartan, red or green.
