Description

In 2014, Gerhard Richter completed Birkenau, four abstract canvases born of a harrowing encounter with the only known photographs documenting the extermination process at Auschwitz. Taken at great personal risk by members of the Sonderkommando, these rare images become the starting point for a body of work that deliberately shuns the spectacular in order to interrogate the act of looking itself. In a meticulous and moving inquiry, Éric de Chassey examines the photographs, their reception, and their transformation through art. He compels us to reconsider our relationship to visual memory, the erosion of empathy, and what it means-now-to represent the unrepresentable.
